Apple Vision Pro headset launches in U.S. on Feb. 2

Appleā€™s Vision Pro launch

Apple’s Vision Pro is set to launch in the United States on February 2, as announced in a press release on Monday, with preorders commencing on January 19.

Preorders will open at 5 p.m.  Pacific Time on January 19, according to information on the Vision Pro’s product page.

Prescription lens inserts for the Vision Pro are priced at $149, and the headset is equipped with 256 GB of storage, the company disclosed.

During premarket trading on Monday, Apple’s shares experienced a three-quarters of a percent increase.

Priced at $3,500, the Vision Pro is Apple’s response to Meta’s Quest headsets and has reportedly been in development for several years.  Apple unveiled the product at its Worldwide Developers Conference in 2023.

In Monday’s release, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated, “The era of spatial computing has arrived.”  The headset is powered by Appleā€™s M2 chip, the same one used in its computers.

The Vision Pro marks Apple’s first entry into a new product category since the launch of the Apple Watch in 2015.  Analysts and experts do not anticipate the headset to generate significant revenue initially.  UBS, for example, estimates Vision Pro revenue at around $1.4 billion, considering it a “relatively immaterial” amount.

Despite previous virtual reality efforts by various companies, widespread adoption among consumers or enterprise customers has yet to be achieved.

The Vision Pro introduces a new operating system, VisionOS, along with an input system enabling users to control the headset using their eyes, hands, and voice.  Apple has indicated that Vision Pro will support several productivity and creativity apps, including Microsoft’s Office suite and Salesforce’s Slack.

With this new headset, Apple aims to revolutionize the consumer experience in gaming and video content.  Users will have the ability to watch content from Apple TV+ and various other platforms on a virtual reality screen described by the company as “feeling 100 feet wide,” according to the release.
